What this website keeps, and what it does not.

bait.tax is the front door to desktop software. The software keeps a firm’s client data on the firm’s own computers; the website never receives any of it.

What the website stores

  • Access requests. The name, firm, email, phone and message you send from the front page, with the time and the network address it came from, so we can reply and tell a real request from a flood.
  • Accounts. For firms given access: email, name, firm, role, a salted hash of the password (never the password), and when the account last signed in.
  • Sessions. Signing in sets one cookie that identifies your session for 14 days of use. A second cookie protects forms against cross-site submission. Neither is read by anyone else, and there are no analytics or advertising cookies.
  • A log of sign-ins, failed sign-ins, password changes, account changes and release uploads, with network addresses, kept for the security of the accounts.
  • Server logs of requests to the update feed, which carry no account information: installed copies of BAIT ask for the current version anonymously.

What it does not do

  • No tracking scripts, no third-party resources: every page is served from bait.tax and runs no script in your browser.
  • Nothing is sold or shared. Requests and accounts are used to set up and support your firm’s access to BAIT and for nothing else.

The desktop software

BAIT stores returns, source documents and settings in an encrypted database on your computers. Optional AI features send scrubbed data (identifiers replaced with temporary keys) to the model provider the firm configures with its own account, only after the firm enables them and under the client consent the firm records. The IRS news shown in the app is read from irs.gov. No usage data is reported to bait.tax.

Questions

Write to hello@bait.tax. To have an account or a request removed, ask from the email address it was made with.

This notice describes the website as built. Have counsel review it before BAIT is offered to firms beyond the preview.
